Lion Couch Embalming Platform, Memphis, Egypt

In the Ptolemaic period in ancient Egypt {305-30 BC} the Apis Bull was a sacred temple animal dedicated to the god Osiris that was embalmed, mummified, and buried in a vast tomb complex in the Serapeum near Memphis.  This “lion couch” is a huge pure alabaster embalming platform used for the preparation of the sacred bulls for burial.  The stones around it are the ruins of the temple.
